Via Atlas News –  Damon Smith, the 20 year old student who planted a homemade bomb in a London tube train back in October of 2016, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for “possession of an explosive substance with intent.” The explosive device, made from a £2 alarm clock and online al Qaeda bomb instructions, failed to detonate. Smith, who is on the autism spectrum, was said to have been obsessed with weapons at a young age and began looking into radical extremist groups such as al Qaeda, however he said he does not hold any extremist views. While in court, Smith’s defense lawyer said it was supposed to be a Halloween prank and that he was “sorry” and “learned his lesson.” His lawyer also suggested that Smith was “indulging in sadistic fantasy”.

The judge said “Quite what your motives were and what your true thinking was in acting as you did is difficult to discern with any degree of clarity or certainty.” Adding that “Whatever the position, the seriousness of what you did cannot be overstated, not least against the background of the fear in which we all live from the use of bombs here and around the world, an all too timely reminder of which were the events in Manchester earlier this week.”
