Mr Trump Jr said he met Natalia Veselnitskaya but that “no meaningful information” on Mrs Clinton was shared.
President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who is an active White House advisor, and then-campaign head Jared Kushner were both in attendance.
This comes amid the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Congress investigating alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
A statement on Sunday from Trump Jr says he met with an individual he was told “might have information helpful to the campaign.”
The statement says the person he was meeting with said she had “information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Ms Clinton.”
However, Trump Jr said it became clear to him that she nothing more on the subject before she launched into a conversation about the adoption of Russian children and the Magnitsky Act.
“It became clear to me that this was the true agenda all along and that claims of potentially helpful information were a pretext for the meeting.”
The story changes
The New York Times reported the meeting on Saturday, and, at that point Trump Jr and Veselnitskaya confirmed that it had occurred, but explained that the presidential campaign was not talked about.
However, the NYT on Sunday reported that Trump Jr agreed to the meeting on the pretext he was getting information detrimental to Hilary Clinton, which is not what he said Saturday.
Sunday’s statement says different.
The meeting took place two weeks after Donald Trump secured the Republican candidacy for president on June 9, 2016.
This is believed to be the first confirmed private gathering between Russian national and members of Donald Trump’s campaign and inner circle.
