Israel has decided to remove the metal detectors at the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem following an uproar from the Palestinian community, which saw violent clashes with Israeli police.
Outrage intensified after Israeli police implemented a ban of all men under 50 years of age from entering the site. Israeli officials said the detectors were to prevent weapons and explosives from being brought into the mosque.
They added that “less obtrusive” security measures will be implemented. Security presence will be boosted at the site until other “advanced technologies” will be implemented to “ensure the security of visitors and worshipers.” Palestinian leaders are urging locals to boycott the mosque.
