Catalan leader criticizes Spain from Brussels

Catalan President Carles Puigdemont held a news conference Tuesday in Brussels where he appealed to the European Union for assistance with the Catalonia crisis and criticized the Spanish central government.

Mr. Puigdemont, although previously offered political asylum by Belgium, said he was not attempting to run from justice by traveling to the EU capital of Brussels.

“I’m not here to demand political asylum, I’m here in Brussels as the capital of Europe,” he told gathered reporters, adding that he would return to Catalonia once he had certain “guarantees”.

The disputed Catalan leader has been charged with rebellion, sedition, and provocation along with other Catalan leadership.

Puigdemont said he would respect the results of a regional snap election being forced by the central government in December 2017.

This comes as the Spanish Constitutional Court suspended Catalonia’s declaration of independence Tuesday morning, considered illegal by Madrid.
